Adopt a Dog

Basenjis

Origins: The Basenji, whose name means Bush Thing is one of the most ancient breeds. While it is believed to have originated in The Congo, dogs resembling Basenjis are depicted on the tombs of Egyptian Pharoahs dating back to 3600 BC. Basenji out of Africa

Characteristics: In many ways, Basenjis behave more like cats than like dogs. They are meticulously clean and groom themselves from head to toe. They are quite curious, highly independent, and reserved. They are easy to housebreak, but are not readily obedience trained. Their short coats require minimal grooming. Nicknamed the African Barkless Dog and the Congo Terrier, Basenjis do not bark, but have a repetoire of howls, yodels, and whines. They have a strong prey drive and should not be allowed to run loose outside of a fenced area. Having originated in Africa, Basenjis can tolerate hot climates but should be kept indoors when the weather is cold. Their modest size and clean, quiet nature make them good dogs for apartment dwellers, so long as they are given daily exercise.

Size: Basenjis stand 16 to 17 inches at the shoulder and generally weigh between 20 and 22 pounds.
