Australian Shepherds

Origins: As their name implies, Australian Shepherds were bred to herd sheep and cattle. Because their strong herding instinct persists, they are inclined to herd children, other animals, and all kinds of moving objects, including bicycles and even cars. For their own protection, they should be kept indoors or in a fenced yard. Many believe that Australian Shepherds do not originally come from Australia but from Spain: that they were used by the Basque shepherds, who later moved to Australia and, from there, to the United States. Characteristics: A high energy dog, bred to work, Aussies need regular stimulation in the form of play, training, and exercise to prevent boredom. A bored Aussie may look for things to do such as chewing and digging. Intelligent and eager to please, Aussies train quite quickly. However, as they were bred to outwit the sheep and cattle they were herding, they will sometimes attempt to outwit their owners! Aussies are generally reserved with strangers and are protective of their property and their families. They should be socialized from an early age so that they will be less likely to develop aggressive behaviors. Loyal, playful, energetic, and highly intelligent, Aussies make excellent family pets so long as their owners are able to provide them with the stimulation and physical activity they crave.
