Airedale Terriers

Origins: The Airedale Terrier is often called the King of Terriers because of its large size and noble appearance. Originating in Great Britain, the Airedale Terrier is a descendant of the now extinct Black and Tan Terrier with some Otter Hound mixed in to give it the size and substance required to tackle badgers and otters. It was developed to outwit its prey, which accounts for the Airedale Terrier's independent, assertive, often brash nature. To fulfill its duties, it had to be sturdy, agile, and just plain stubborn, willing to cross all types of terrain and to pursue its prey into water. The Germans imported Airedale Terriers and used them as police dogs, guard dogs, and war dogs in conflicts with the breed's own homeland, Great Britain. Characteristics: Airedale Terriers are active, smart, and headstrong, with minds of their own. While intelligent, Airedale Terriers are not always quick to obey. They make good guard dogs and will fight to the death to protect their families. Courageous and territorial, they are often aggressive towards other dogs, especially if they have not been raised together. Avid diggers, Airedale Terriers can wreak havoc on a garden if left outdoors. Their dense, wiry coats require regular grooming. Show dogs are hand-stripped, while pets are simply clipped. If the coat is neither stripped nor clipped, the dog will quickly turn into a woolly bear.

Size: On average, the Airedale Terrier stands twenty-three inches at the shoulder and weighs fifty-five pounds.

My Life and Hard Times
In his autobiography My Life and Hard Times, humorist James Thurber has immortalized his eccentric Airedale Terrier, Muggs.
