Afghan Hounds

Origins: Long haired Greyhounds resembling Aghans lived in the Middle East several thousand years ago and some people say that the dog Noah carried aboard the ark was an Afghan Hound. Sight hounds, Aghans hunt by vision rather than by scent. Possessing exceptional speed, they were originally used for hunting gazelles, deer, foxes, wolves, and leopards. On desert hunts they were expected to keep up or out pace hunters mounted on horseback. Having adapted to the rocky, mountainous terrain of Afghanistan, they are exceptionally agile animals and far more rugged than their elegant appearance would suggest.

Characteristics: Dignified and aloof, yet loyal, good natured, and well-behaved as adults. Some owners describe them as being more feline than canine in nature, as they are reserved, independent, highly intelligent, and are not readily obedience trained. They generally get along well with other dogs as well as with smaller animals such as cats. Sight hounds, Afghans should never be allowed to run loose outdoors in the city or suburbs, as they are inclined to run off after any moving target. A fenced yard is a must! Afghan Hounds require lots of exercise and daily grooming.

Size: Afghan Hounds stand 25 to 27 inches at the shoulder and weight 50 to 60 pounds.
