Origins:Also known as Coban Kopegi, Karabash Dog, Kara bas, Kangal Dog, Anatolian Shepherds were not used to herd sheep but to protect them from predators.
Large, powerful dogs, Anatolian Shepherds originated in Turkey where they were used by semi-nomads to guard livestock from wolves, bears, jackals, and wild boar. To perform their job, they were bred to think and act quickly on their own.
Characteristics: Anatolian Shepherds are hardy dogs, able to withstand extreme cold and heat. Their intelligence, courage, and fierce loyalty to their families makes them exceptional guard dogs. They are extremely territorial and are not friendly towards strangers, though they are rarely aggressive. Because of their size, strength and their highly independent nature, they do not make good pets for the average household. Those which are kept as pets, should be socialized and obedience trained from an early age. To prevent boredom and subsequent destructive behavior, Anatolian Shepherds require mental stimulation and are happiest when they have something to guard and protect. They thrive on outdoor activity. Though short-haired, the Anatolian Shepherd's dense coat and thick undercoat are best suited for cold climates.
Size: Anatolian Shepherds stand 27 to 32 inches tall and generally weigh 90 to 150 pounds.
